Our Environment

The Cairns region is home to some of the world’s greatest natural treasures including World Heritage listed rainforests, thriving wetlands, lush green hills, unique river networks and waterways and the Great Barrier Reef – all of which support an intricate ecosystem of flora and fauna.

Recent population and economic growth have placed increasing pressure on our environment.  And, with our population projected to grow significantly over the next 10 to 15 years, ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources and maintaining the environmental values of the region is more important than ever.

s a community it is our responsibility to ensure better conservation of our environment and better management of our most precious resource - water.  Although we receive some of the highest rainfall in Australia, water (and lots of it) is the lifeblood of our region.

By just taking our share and no more, we can maintain the right balance between people and nature.
