Water Tips: Bathroom
More than 30% of all domestic water is used in the bathroom.
- Water is wasted each time cold water is flushed from a hot water pipe. Keep containers nearby for when you turn on the bath or shower and use to water the garden or indoor plants.
- Try to reduce your shower time – use an egg timer to time yourself and see if you can do better. A minute or two less showering time adds up to a lot of water over a year.
- A standard showerhead uses about 15 to 25 litres of water per minute, while a four star rated water efficient showerhead uses as little as 6 or 7 litres per minute. A four-person household will use approximately 100,000 litres per year for five minute showers. Install a water efficient ‘3-star or 4-star ’ rated showerhead and you can save up to 21,000 litres of water every year and money on your energy bill.
- Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth and use a glass of water to rinse your mouth. You could save 4,000 litres of water a year (if you brush for 3 minutes). If every Queenslander turned off the tap when they brushed their teeth, 10 Olympic swimming pools of fresh clean water would be saved – every time!
- Turn off the tap while shaving, and save up to 3,500 litres per year.
- A leaking toilet cistern can be extremely wasteful – up to 60,000 litres of water in a year. To check your cistern, place a few drops of food colouring in the tank. Without flushing, look for colouring in the toilet bowl. If it's getting through, you've got a leak, and it's time to call a Queensland licensed plumber.
- In a household with four people, a single flush toilet will use over 70,000 litres a year, whereas a dual flush uses only 30,000 litres. If you don't already have one, install a dual-flush toilet. You’ll save up to 3 litres of water every time you use the half flush instead of the full flush.
